Description
Imagine the three bears adorning your coffee table. These bears make for a great conversational piece. Men say it is Dad with a beer and women say it is Mom with a drink.
SIZE – The polar bears are 11″ x 9″ x 3″ high.
COLOUR- Bears- sandy brown and white fur, Black nose claws, Red bucket and blue bottle. White ice pillow. Ice Blue crackled the base and I patched it with silver epoxy that looks like ice.
NOTE: The picture shows the flat ice curing up, it’s an optical allusion.
Computer, tablet, and phone screens may cause the colour to look slightly different than what it is. See the colour description above.
I carved each bear from stoneware clay. I then spray-painted and hand-painted the bears with under-glaze paint. I rolled out clay for the base and attached the bears to the base using a slurry of clay called slip. I swirled blue under-glaze on the base.
I bisque-fired it in my kiln. I clear-glazed the bears and sprinkled broken glass on the base then fired it in an extremely hot glaze to about 2900 degrees for about 9 hours. The glass gives the base a crackled ice look.
I coated the ice pillow for Mama bear with a ceramic snow glaze which isn’t fired in the kiln. I won’t come off.
The base cracked in the firing at Mom’s feet because she was so heavy for the ice. I repaired it with a silver epoxy accentuating a frost heave crack on a frozen lake. It is very sturdy and will last generations.
