Yarn bowls are a good way to hold balls of yarn. Potters like me make them from clay and wood workers turn them out of bowls too.
I enjoy making all types of yarn bowls. Needless to say I have a lot of fun making these bowls.
I have carved out dogs or cats on the side and the slot where the yarn comes out becomes the tail. Others ones, I call Snot Nose bowls. These I carve on a face that is wonky and colour it blues and greens to represent someone with a very bad cold. The yarn comes out the nose, at least it’s not snot. I even made a Betty Boob or surprise face yarn bowl.
In the past few years I got busy making other pottery, instead of yarn bowls. This year I made 2 bowls, a zebra and a black terrier dog.
I start by turning the bowls on my wheel. When they are leather hard I sculpted the head, feet and tail then attached them to the bowl with clay-slip. I painted stripes on the head, legs and tail for the zebra. It’s body was tuned on the wheel with black and white clay. I made the dog with black clay, carved out the fur and accented with dark brown under-glaze.

My pottery journey, my passion, didn’t start until my 40’s. Creating pottery is my happy place, especially decorating, vases, cups, bowls, trays, and creating sculptures. The more I create, the more my imagination is spurred on. I will be sharing how I make pottery here.
