Last February, I blogged how I painted row house on mugs. https://thebutlerspottery.ca/2023/02/07/back-to-my-roots-of-folk-art-painting-on-pottery-this-time/ They are finished.
There was a nice surprise when I opened my kiln. The blue on the winter cup turned speckled, instead of a solid blue. It looks like winter snow on snow-capped houses.

A few colours of the under-glaze paint ran into each other, which is my fault. When painting I grabbed a jar of low-fire under-glaze instead of the high-fire under-glaze. Glazes and clay are designed to melt at certain temperatures. If it’s fired too hot, it will melt too much and run where it shouldn’t. The last firing, the clear glaze firing, is the hottest at cone 6, much hotter hotter than the bisque low-fire under-glaze it is designed to be fired at. To avoid making this mistake again, I took the low fire under-glazes out of the high-fire glaze bin and put them with my other low-fire under-glazes.

Life is full of mistakes, ones we toss out and others we keep or even hide. The moral of this is to learn from our mistakes and move on, don’t stop.
How have you overcome or learned from a mistake you’ve made? Or did you accept it and move on?
